How Our Kittens are Raised
Our cats are part of our family. They have free roam of our house, except for times when privacy is needed, as in
the case of mommy delivering and raising her kittens for example.
Two weeks before one of our girls is due to deliver kittens, she is moved to a room where she can rest in
preparation for delivery. This way, she isn't stressed or bothered by the other cats.
Right before delivery, my preggy girl moves into my office with me. I spend a large part of my day in my office
doing freelance writing, posting pictures of my cats, and corresponding with kitten parents. So when my girl has
her kittens, she and her kittens are no more than 2 feet from me for most of my 10 hour work day (except for when
I go in the nursery to play with the "toddlers").
I mid-wife all my litters. None of my girls are ever left alone during delivery. Actually, I stay with them and won't
even leave my house during the whole week before or after they delivery. My kittens are handled from the minute
they are born!
Every single day for the first couple of weeks, my kittens get weighed, photographed, loved, hugged, and kissed.
Their nesting place is kept immaculately, with bedding being changed twice a day during this time.
When their eyes begin to open, they begin to get daily grooming. By 2 weeks old, they are learning to let me clean
their eyes, and by 3 weeks old, they are getting combed. Around 3 1/2 to 4 weeks old, they begin to come out of
the nest on their own and start to explore.
---------------------------------
At 4 weeks old, our toddling kittens are moved into the nursery, right beside my office and off the livingroom.
There are glass doors throughout our house so that all the cats can always hear normal household sounds, see
the other cats, and never feel isolated or alone.
I spend LOTS of time playing with kittens in the nursery! (You can easily see that by checking out the thousands
of kitten pictures I have on Flickr!) At 4 weeks old, we begin feeding them real food and teaching them to use the
litter box.
By 5 weeks old we start the weaning process, letting mom spend more time away from the kittens. At 5 weeks old,
my kittens also start receiving weekly baths, including blow drying, nail clipping, ear cleaning, the works!
By 6 weeks old, the kittens come out into the rest of the house for parts of the day. We still keep them separated
from our own cats for their safety and protection. We don't allow full interaction with the older cats until they
have had their first set of shots.
----------------------------------
During weeks 7 and 8, playtime is the most important part of our day! I do not take kitten socialization lightly!
During these last days with us, they receive all the love and attention they need to become confident kittens before
they leave our nest.
Each kitten comes home to you with their own toy that smells like their mommy and litter mates to help ease the
transition. They also come with a kitten packet that includes a bag of World's Best Cat Litter, a sample of their food
from Purina Pro Plan, and more!
-----------------------------------
As devoted as I am up to the point they leave our home, I am just as devoted to them while they are part of your
family. You have my personal guarantee to stand by our contract and to be there should you EVER have questions
about your kitten or cat.
